International students

Overview
The physics department offers bachelor, master, and Ph. D degrees. The Ph. D. and master degree programs will be instructed in English. International students are expected to have a good command of English to attend the Ph. D. and master degree program. The bachelor program is not recommended for students who are not familiar with Chinese.
Ph. D. students are required to have 30 course credits and two papers published in international journals (SCI papers) before apply for a defense for dissertation. It takes on average 4 to 5 years to obtain a Ph. D. degree in our department. Most Ph. D. students can have scholarships from National Chung Hsing University and research assistantship from the research funding of their advisors. Within the first two year period, the student must pass the Ph. D. qualify examination to become a Ph. D. candidate. The opportunity for whom finished his/her Ph.D. program to work as a postdoc for one or two years in our department or other institutions in Taiwan is very high. For the master degree program, students are also required to have 30 course credits (including 6 credits for master thesis). There is an oral examination for the master thesis.

Graduation Requirements for Master Students

Minimum required years of the enrollment: 1 years
Maximum years of the enrollment: 4 years

2. Criteria for graduation
The criteria for graduation are in the following:
Courses: one must obtain at least 30 units, which include 12 units for required courses + 18 units for elective courses

A1. Required courses: 12 units for required courses
The required courses for the department are (which are exactly 12 units in total)
Seminar I (1 unit)
Seminar II (1 unit)
Review of Literature in Physics I (0 unit)
Review of Literature in Physics II (0 unit)
Special Topics Research I (2 units)
Special Topics Research II (2 units)
Thesis (6 units) (Note: Each one is with 3 units. Therefore one must select it for two semesters.)

A2. Elective courses: one must choose at least 18 units of elective courses (or equally 6 elective courses because each one is with 3 units) opened by the graduation courses of the Department of Physics or Institute of Nanoscience.
Note 1: For students belonging to "Biophysics Division" in the Department of Physics, the course "Biophysics" is also a required course.
Note 2: For students obtaining the units for both Condensed Matter Physics I and Solid State Physics I, only 3 units (i.e., one course) are counted in total.

*Important: When you are in your 2nd year, please check with your advisor or administrative staff if the units you obtained/ are going to obtain meet the graduation criteria.

That is, one must choose at least 12 units of elective courses (or equally 4 elective courses because each one is with 3 units) as well as opened by the Department of Physics or Institute of Nanoscience.
Note that units of Special Topics Research I & II are not counted in the 30 units of graduation criteria.
